On the Page is a 10-part seminar that serves as an introductory series for beginner creatives who are interested in making their own books or are looking to publish their own projects. This series examines how publications can be an ideal format for artistic presentation and documentation. The presentations introduce the full scope of a publication project from conception to distribution. Produced by Currency Design.
On the Page:
Publication as Compelling Format for Artists
We will be unpacking the “daunting” idea of publication as a format, challenges described by people unfamiliar (Eg. Not good with computer programs, books are too difficult to plan or just simply being unsure how to capture one’s practice in book form.) We would debunk these myths of publications by sharing reasons and possibilities of publications as format. We would be outlining the series, as a visual tutorial series that will inform viewers of what they need to know before they start a publication of their own, as well as run through all the topics we would cover across the whole series
Next we would be describing the characteristic qualities of publications, print and digital formats. We would be describing and giving examples on different types of uses for publications as format and how it serves different needs of artists. Introduce the roles of editors, designers, printers and collaborators that can make an artist’s vision come through.
Lastly as a case study, we look into various publication projects in Singapore and the region. (Featuring books from the Singapore Art Book Library or from a collection)
