NANG (est. 2016) is an independent print-only magazine which covers cinema and cinema cultures in the Asian world. The aim is to publish, issue-by-issue, a rich and profound collection of words and images on cinema, for knowledge, inspiration, and enjoyment. Each issue is helmed by guest editors and structured around a specific theme. Only 1,500 copies of each issue are produced, without reprints.

duotone is a duo based in Singapore focused on combining photography with editorial and typography design to create and tell stories. They utilise a mixed media format to create an immersive reading experience through print.

Meantime is an independent magazine documenting local stories lost to time. Published annually, each issue uncovers Singapore’s past through personal stories.

Journal of Creative Pursuit (JoCP) is a diary of creatives that delve deeper into their creative practice, social, and cultural issues highlighted through their work. C05    Your Local Newsstand [SG]

Your Local Newsstand is an independent publishing group based in Singapore that specialises in producing and publishing photography-based imprints. Their goal is to provide a platform for photographers to explore their craft through the medium of zines and other printed matter—collaborating with photographers from all over the world to produce limited edition zines that revolve around human stories, travel, social and political issues.

C05    Aperture Brought Me Here [TH]

Aperture Brought Me Here, a co-independent photography zine publisher, investigates the relationship between photographic narrative and its conceptual documentary. Taking photography beyond itself and using communication design to inspire and visually convey an intended narrative through the craft of publication design. The scope of work revolves around the prospect of how a photography book interacts with its readers without the influence of words.

S11    National Gallery Singapore | Singapore Art Museum [SG]

National Gallery Singapore is a visual arts institution which oversees the largest public collection of modern Singapore and Southeast Asian art. The Gallery publishes books on the visual arts of Singapore and Southeast Asia. Its core genres include exhibition catalogues, Southeast Asian art research, general titles and children’s books.

Singapore Art Museum opened in 1996 as the first art museum in Singapore, sited in the heritage buildings of the former SJI and Catholic High in Bras Basah. Known as SAM, the museum presents contemporary art from a Southeast Asian perspective for artists, art lovers and the art curious in multiple venues across the island, including public spaces and a new venue in the historic port area of Tanjong Pagar.
Plant Press is a Singapore-based print studio that collaborates, produces, and distributes botany- and art-related materials. It is run by artist and scientific botanical illustrator Loh Xiang Yun.

C18    Perimeter Editions [AU]

Perimeter Editions is the award-winning publishing imprint of Melbourne-based bookstore Perimeter Books and distribution house Perimeter Distribution. Releasing its first publication in 2012, Perimeter Editions has gone on to publish more than 70 titles, winning several awards and exhibiting at key art book fairs in the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The imprint’s focus rests on publishing autonomous books in close collaboration with photographers, artists, curators, and writers. Its publications exhibit a criticality and sensitivity to content and form.

Thing Books (est. 2021) is an online bookshop specialising in artists’ books, zines and self-published/independently-produced printed matter. Dedicated to the promotion and understanding of the book as an artistic medium, Thing Books organises the annual Singapore Art Book Fair, and houses a catalogue of published print materials under the SG Art Book Library.

C20    Wendy’s Subway [US]

Wendy’s Subway is a reading room, writing space, and independent publisher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. They support emerging artists and writers in making experimental, urgent work and create alternative modes for learning and thinking in community. Wendy’s Subway is dedicated to encouraging creative, critical, and discursive engagement with arts and literature. Their multi-series publishing initiative includes artist’s books, poetic texts, and hybrid-genre works by time-based artists.

C21    Lugemik [EE]

Lugemik (est. 2010) is an independent publishing initiative based in Tallinn, Estonia, founded by graphic designer Indrek Sirkel and artist Anu Vahtra. In collaboration with different artists, designers, and theorists, Lugemik has published over 90 titles to date. In 2013, Lugemik opened its first bookshop on the premises of the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM) and 2020 operates a bookshop on the premises of Tallinn Art Hall.

C22    Jap Sam Books [NL]

Jap Sam Books, headed by Eleonoor Jap Sam, is an independent, award-winning publishing house based in the Netherlands. Jap Sam Books publishes titles that explore developments in architecture, art, philosophy, design, photography and theory as well as the fields that touch them, such as urbanism, landscape, sociology and history. Jap Sam Books has been established to reflect, connect and respond to developments in these fields, by bringing out a range of critical and reflective books for an international audience.

C23    Each and Every Press [US]

Each and Every Press is a small experimental Risograph studio based in Michigan. Run by artist Brendan Page, the studio uses 3D models, audio components, and video stills to create publications that explore the way we tell stories. Pieces by this studio include one of a kind cassette tapes made just for you, a book about the show Love Island, and a zine about a shadow passing over shaped hedges.

C25    Leonorana [PT]

Leonorana is an interdisciplinary research magazine that is a tribute to Portuguese poet Ana Hatherly as they resume and update the central focus of her work. Namely, concerning the study and experimental practice of the complementarity between verbal and visual languages. Due to her vast visual, literary and academic art experience, Hatherly symbolises the relevance research has in terms of artistic practice and the way it is perceived as knowledge. Leonorana publishes essentially essays as the preferred genre as it’s the most adequate to translate the forming thought and the one that better enables to undertake speculative approaches.

C26    Stolen Books [PT]

Stolen Books is not a database of stolen or missing books, but an independent publisher out of Lisbon, Portugal. They steal (with the agreement of the authors) and publish works whose absence constitutes an offense to the international book market. Working with established names alongside up and coming talents, Stolen Books reproduces copies of visual projects, purposely designed for the book format.

The Institute of Critical Zoologists was founded by Singaporean multidisciplinary artist Robert Zhao Renhui. Zhao’s artistic practice addresses the relationship between humans and nature, challenging accepted parameters of objectivity and scientific modes of classifications. Over the years, Zhao has appropriated codes and conventions of documentary photography and visual art exhibitions to compose compelling narratives about our relationship with non-human species. His work has been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions.

C27    K. Verlag [DE]
K. Verlag is a publishing atelier advancing new forms of the “book-as-exhibition”. Their editorial-curatorial approach to bookmaking engenders provocative encounters with art, science, design, politics, and ecology. Based in Berlin, the atelier collaborates internationally with artists and institutions, developing singular volumes, whose materiality and micro architecture are never exhausted for the purpose of (exhibition) documentation alone. K. pushes the boundaries of the traditional exhibition catalogue—their publications instead open independent and/or adjacent aesthetic and discursive spaces.

C28    Atelier HOKO [SG]

Atelier HOKO (est. 2002) is an independent research lab that focuses on the study of the growing disengagement between people, things and space. The atelier hopes to cultivate in people an open-ness and ability to un-know, bringing about a heightened curiosity towards all phenomena by taking a fresh look at reality. Founded by Alvin Ho and Clara Koh.
 

C28    UTRECHT [JP]

UTRECHT (est. 2002) is an artbook shop located in Shibuya, Tokyo. They sell books by artists and independent publishers from around the world. Since its start in 2009, UTRECHT has been a co-organiser of the TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR.

The Book Society is a Seoul-based publishing collective. Since 2010, they have curated exhibitions and published and edited books under their small imprint, mediabus.

C30    Hothouse [SG]

Hothouse is an interdisciplinary project space keen on developing critical and long form creative practices that does not shy away from excess and layers. Taking cues from the humid ecologies of the greenhouse, it hopes to provide a space that supports artistic practices and remains attentive to processes.
 

C30    Minori Murata [JP]

Minori Murata is an art director and visual artist. Murata's practice is based on compositing, processing, collage, and she originates high-calorie visual expressions and motion graphics videos with a large amount of information. Murata primarily directed and produced visual art in advertising for fashion brands such as Adidas, NIKE, GAP, BEAMS, and fashion department stores such as Laforet Harajuku and PARCO. She has also directed art for “Imma-ten” by the virtual model imma, created the artwork and installation “GODS AND MOM BELIEVE IN YOU” for the Stealable Art Exhibition at the SAME GALLERY.

Sui Yao is a designer, artist, and creative from Shanghai that is now based in Singapore. She currently runs a small creative collective called Almost Fresh that preserves elements from nature and turns them into art, products, and small publications.


C31    Nini Sum [CN]

Nini Sum is a mixed-media artist based in Shanghai, China. Her work varies from limited edition art prints to mixed-media collages, mural paintings, and public arts. She is a co-founder of IdleBeats, China’s first independent screen-printing studio. Dazed and Confused magazine has described her work as “a new vision of Chinese urban art”.

KAPUTT is a collective focused on reconnecting with lived human experiences in a time of isolation through a plethora of mediums.

YeP YeP is an experimental fashion and art magazine published in Hong Kong, featuring original, commissioned artworks created by local artists. YeP YeP serves as a platform to showcase some of the most exciting emerging talent from Hong Kong, and to broadcast their unique creative voices to the world.
 

C33    Gleam Pulp [SG]

Gleam Pulp is a collective started by Singaporean based graphic designers @yolanda.pdf and @kool.type. The pair has evolved from an online lockdown friendship into one that shares an ever-growing interest in communicating their feelings visually through type, illustrations and bright compositions–embracing a practice of carefully recreating analogue techniques both physically and digitally.

Binatang Press! is a small-scale independent publisher that focuses on art and visual culture. Their mission is to represent non-mainstream collaborators and bring them to a wider audience. They tell stories of subcultures in Indonesia, working mostly with local independent creative communities.

Vanessa Lim is an independent illustrator and designer based in Singapore. Knust is the graphic space and small shop in artist-run-organisation Extrapool in Nijmegen, NL. Founded in 1984, the Knust collective continues to be highly specialised in the stencil printing technique, printing and making books, posters, and (maga)zines in residency, DIY and consignment.

The Asian Film Archive (AFA) was founded in January 2005 as a non-profit organisation to preserve the rich Asian film heritage, to encourage scholarly research on film, and to promote a wider critical appreciation of this art form. AFA’s mission is to Save, Explore and Share the art of Asian cinema. Its programmes are designed to promote a wider critical appreciation of film, while functioning as vibrant hubs of activity.

S39    SUTD ASD & Asiapac Books [SG]

Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) is part of the young Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), which was established in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. SUTD ASD’s publications are distributed by Asiapac Books, a Singaporean publishing house specialising in illustrated books about Asian arts and culture.

STPI (est. 2002) is a dynamic creative workshop and contemporary art gallery based in Singapore. NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) is a national research centre of the Nanyang Technological University. NTU CCA Singapore positions itself as a space for critical discourse and encourages new ways of thinking about Spaces of the Curatorial in Southeast Asia and beyond. Variegated is a collaborative group comprising of individuals with their own creative proclivity, unified around the common goal of producing content rooted in research, print, art, and design. miloyeo, also known as Melody Yeo or even Hoiboyo to some, is an unemployed part-time model that spends most of her time pondering the important questions in life and then abruptly never thinking about them again, forgetting to write her thoughts down. Her main creative output is illustration. Through it, she explores the relationship she has with creation, the female form and censorship.

AKAAKA Art Publishing, Inc (est. 2006) is a Japanese publisher that specialises in photography and art. AKAAKA has published more than 250 books since, featuring a diverse range of Japanese and international artists, many of whom have been awarded the Kimura Ihei Photo Prize and nominated for the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards. Students for a Fossil Free Future is a student coalition with members and supporters from various Singapore universities, calling for divestment from fossil fuels and investment in a regenerative and liveable future. They believe that this is one of the first steps towards a transition into a possible, sustainable planet. Such futures are imagined while current frustrations are illustrated in their writing and artwork to express the emotional impact of climate change and the work of systemic change that is needed today.

Benjamin is a digital studio founded by a group of creators from various backgrounds. While there is no restriction on the collective theme, the studio encourages works with a strong research and investigative focus, aided by the multiple perspectives an online studio brings. By allowing each member the freedom to investigate in the directions that they are interested in, they hope that they can push each other to further depths of research and focus.

Z58    NOCEILINGxWALL [SG]

NOCEILINGxWALL follows the form of a “post-studio” online practice as a strategic (lazy) excuse for a dynamic (convenient) site of production to accommodate oscillating schedules and lingering physicalities. Within a digital mode of operation, this collective explores peripheral positions, and considers the possibilities of research, production, and exhibition via alternative spaces.

Pessimist Pies is artists Lai Yu Tong & Ryan Lim Zi Yi. They make art and art books independently but once in a while come together to make music as Pessimist Pies. They also run a project called Robin, doing exhibitions in camping tents.

Travel Field Notes is a Singapore-based publishing studio. Central to its practice is the use of fieldwork to better understand the impact of tourism on societies, cultures, and heritage—issues too serious to be explored extensively in mainstream travel magazines. Its observations and non-fiction accounts are written in the style of ethnographic field notes and presented as zines—an art form that complements an alternative form of travel writing.

radioriotgrrrl (rrg) is inspired by the 90s feminist punk movement. Resisting psychic death and creating with complete autonomy, they believe in the revival of things versus mindless production.
